DAR Historic Preservation Grants

DAR Historic Preservation Grants (formerly the Special Projects Grants) provide local community grant funding to support projects exemplifying the organization’s mission areas of historic preservation, education, and patriotism. These grants are intended to provide financial support to local public charity 501(c)(3) organizations, including museums, historic sites, literacy and tutoring programs, as well as other organizations and groups in your community who support DAR’s commitment to preserve historic resources, sites and other history-related projects.
The DAR Historic Preservation Grants program was first introduced in 2011 as Special Project Grant. They are typically grants up to $10,000. Each grant is sponsored by a local chapter to give financial support to projects in local communities that exemplify the mission of the DAR. The program awards $250,000 annually across the country. Sponsorship of Project Application
If your organization has a project and is interested in applying for a DAR Historic Preservation Grant, please contact us to learn more and request Chapter Sponsorship. We encourage interested organizations to contact us by November 1st with your interest to help provide us with adequate time to prepare your sponsorship letter. In 2019, the chapter made a decision to pursue a DAR Historic Preservation Grant to support the Museum of Seminole County History in its efforts to preserve a rare 1795 Cabriolet buggy. This buggy is part of a larger collection of horse-drawn carriages in The Nygren Carriage Collection that will be permanently displayed at the Museum.
A 2020 DAR Historic Preservation Grant of $5000 was awarded to the Museum of Seminole County History to use to preserve the Cabriolet buggy. The knowledge gained from this conservation treatment can then be transferred to the other buggies in this Collection dating from 1795 up through the creation of the automobile. |
Past Awards
In 2012, the Sallie Harrison Chapter sponsored the Seminole County Historical Society in Sanford. They were awarded a Special Project Grant in the Education Category. The grant enabled the purchase of 500 new labels for the Museum of Seminole County History. The new labels contain information pertinent to each exhibit to enhance the educational experience of visitors.

In its first three years, Florida has received a combined total of eight grants award, to bring more than $42,000 into Florida community projects (about 2-3 projects each year).
The Sallie Harrison Chapter also supports and promotes the efforts of fellow Florida Chapters, such as attending the March 22, 2014 historic marker dedication at the Haile Homestead in Gainesville, Florida. The Haile Homestead was a recipient of a historic preservation Special Projects Grant to help repair water damage and restore the "talking walls" inside the homestead.
